Five Skin Care “No-Nos” You Could Be Doing Daily

We all know the golden skin care rules that we shouldn’t break when it comes to our skin… or do we? Some old and infamous beauty secrets that we follow may not be as good for our skin as we thought.

We share five “No-Nos” in skin care that we might be doing without being aware that these “No-No’s” are some of the worst we can do to our skin. We also share solutions so your skin can be its best version now.

Here’re five things you really need to avoid:

1. Over-exfoliating

Exfoliating is good for your skin as it removes dead skin cells that clog your pores. However over-exfoliating or vigorous exfoliating can damage your skin’s protective barrier, leaving it exposed to environmental toxins.

When exfoliating, be gentle and don’t use harsh abrasive sponges and brushes. For dry and sensitive skin, we recommend exfoliating once a week, for normal/combination skin, twice a week, and for oily/combination skin up to three times a week.

We highly recommend you try Hernuvin Wash because it exfoliates your skin while you wash your face.  It is very gentle and will not dry out your skin. Hernuvin Wash is suitable for all skin types, and is medically formulated for skin traumatised from chemotherapy and estrogen depletion.  It restores the normal pH balance, desensitises red and inflamed skin and can be used as a full body wash.

2. Taking hot steamy showers

Are you convinced that taking steamy showers opens your pores and allows deep cleaning? While heat does open your pores, staying in steam rids your body of its natural oils, making your skin very dry. It also irritates skin conditions like Eczema and Psoriasis.

On the opposite end, cold showers are surprisingly good for your general well-being. Here are a few good reasons why you should consider adding cold showers to your health and beauty routine:

  • Cold water releases endorphins to put you in a happy mood
  • It kick-starts your metabolism and over time, helps your body to burn fat
  • It improves blood circulation to help you feel invigorated and energised. The by-product is glowing skin.
  • The shock of cold water stimulates leukocytes (white blood cells) to fight infections and common illnesses, like colds and the flu.
  • Some studies even indicate that cold showers could make the body more resistant to certain types of cancer.

Wow, who knew! While the cold shower habit is beneficial for most people, the habit takes some getting used to. The ideal way to take a cold shower is to ease in to the habit.

Start by slowly lowering the temperature at the end of a usual shower. Get the water cold enough that you start to feel uncomfortable. Then, stay underneath the water for 2 or 3 minutes. Breathing deeply will help decrease your discomfort. The next time you try this exercise, make the water slightly colder. Try to last for another minute or two in the colder water. After performing this activity 7 to 10 times, you’ll find that you might even look forward to turning the hot water down.

Please note that if you’re feeling sick, have recently been released from the hospital, or are otherwise immune-compromised, wait to try out cold showers.

3. Product Junkie

Loading on the products does not do wonders for your skin. You do not need a million and one products, all promising an expensive miracle or two. Besides it being overwhelming and expensive, when you load your skin with various products it can have harmful effects and drowns out your skin’s voice.

Like most things, it is better to focus on one thing, giving it time to work before moving to another one. And remember that a little goes a long way so use restraint when using your products. Less is always more.

Skin care does not have to be complex. A daily routine is important but it can be kept simple. Our Hernuvin Skin Care Range has been designed to simplify your skin care routine. Cleanse, moisturise and sun care protection are all you need to start your day; and then cleanse and moisturise before you go to bed. For an anti-aging solution, we recommend adding our eye care cream to improve lymphatic drainage and puffiness, retinol serum to improve collagen production and reverse sun damage and hand care for rich moisturising benefits.  Our products complement each other and work synergistically for best overall results.

4. Not Protecting Your Skin

We all know how the sun causes skin damage and skin cancer, we are sure you’re diligent about applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen daily. However, there may have been a time in your past when you were not so careful. Sun damage is 90% responsible for aging your skin so we cannot over-emphasise the importance of using sunscreen before you walk out the door. In fact, you should have sunscreen packed in your bag as an emergency essential for those times when you are unexpectedly exposed to the sun. You’ll be the skin hero when you pull out your sun care and cover up! In addition to using products with SPF daily, using a retinol serum at night is highly recommended to slow and reverse the effects of sun damage. Add Hernuvin Retinol Serum as a gold standard to your skin care routine to combat early signs of aging, and help heal sun-damaged skin.

5. Forgetting About Your Décolletage and Eyes

What we so often neglect is our eye cream and continuing our moisturising routine down our décolletage (neck and chest area). Although it’s an area that’s often forgotten, your décolletage is frequently on display, especially when you wear an open shirt or plunging neckline. Neglecting your décolletage can result in overexposure to harmful ultraviolet A (UVA) rays, sun damage, premature wrinkling, and other skin issues.

Continue your entire skin care regime down your neck to your chest; this means cleansing your neck as well as moisturising. Make sure you’re gentle and massage in upward motions so that you’re not pulling the skin downward, which is precisely where you don’t want your skin to go!

The skin under our eyes is the most delicate on our entire bodies and needs plenty of hydration and nourishment, not just to prevent fine lines, but to help get rid of dark circles and puffiness. Check out eye care cream to improve lymphatic drainage and puffiness. It also has intense anti-ageing effects, decreases hyperpigmentation and decreases dark circles.

Then, of course, there’s the basic skin mistakes that we know but sometimes forget:

  • Never sleep in your makeup, always cleanse and moisturise before bed!
  • Wash your makeup brushes once a week and wash your makeup sponge every time you use it!
  • Don’t forget to check the expiration dates on makeup and dispose when necessary.
  • Get your beauty sleep – at night is when your skin does the majority of its repair work!
